This Bras En L’Air, Or “Arms In The Air,” French Mantel Clock Demonstrates The Neoclassical Luxury Of The Second Empire Style. The Focal Point Of The Clock Is A Large Doré Bronze Maiden, Who Indicates The Time With Her Extended Arms And Fingers Pointed To The Corresponding Hours And Minutes. The Craftsman Has Shown Exquisite Attention To Detail In The Woman’S Drapery And The Surrounding Vine Motifs.
On The Right Side Of The Clock, Enameled Hour Indicators Are Divided Into 12-Hour Divisions, While The Left Minute Indicator Is Divided Into 5-Minute Increments. As Minutes And Hours Pass, The Figure Slowly Raises Her Arms Before Dropping Back Down Upon Reaching The 12Th Hour Or 60Th Minute. As The Figure’S Hands Appear To Be Free Of Any Connection To The Movement Of The Clock, This Treasure Can Also Be Considered A Mystery Clock. Set On A Adorned Carrara Marble Base.
