The Son Of The Russian Modernist Alexej Jawlensky — An Artist Remembered Fondly As The “Russian Matisse” — Andreas Jawlensky Inevitably Began His Career As A Dedicated Colorist. The Present Oil Is Exemplary Of His Output, Wherein He Brought Together The Vivid Color Palette Of The Fauves With The Ideals Of The Expressionist Movement That Soon Followed. He Excelled In Capturing The Russian Landscape Through Flattened Planes Of Wild Color, Evoking The Explosive Palettes Of Matisse, De Vlaminck, Derain And Other Key Fauves, And Revealing The Enormous And Lasting Impact Of These Post-Impressionist Greats.

Born In 1902 In The Vitebsk Governorate, Jawlensky Was Destined To Be An Artist. He Began To Paint In His Father’S Studio At The Young Age Of Just Four, His Early Career Was Shaped By The Work Of His Father, The Great Russian Expressionist Painter Alexej Georgewitsch Von Jawlensky. Later Encountering The Work Of Vincent Van Gogh, Jawlensky Developed A Style All His Own. Capturing The Russian People And Landscape With A Vibrant Palette And Flattened Planes, His Work Remains An Exceptional Example Of Modern Russian Art.
